Art of the Steal – Film and Discussion
Jan 23 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm

This film looks at the controversy surrounding the art collection of Dr. Albert C. Barnes, a millionaire who amassed a remarkable selection of significant works during the early 20th century. Barnes sought to keep his priceless pieces together as part of his foundation even after his death, but the involvement of numerous parties led to the scattering of his collection. This documentary sheds light on how his wishes were violated by a handful of opportunistic individuals.

A group discussion to share opinions and thoughts will follow the film.

This month’s film tells the story of a father and daughter living in the forest off the grid – until society
‘intervenes’ in their idyllic life. Their journey is profound and harrowing and beautiful – and we get to wonder about what makes a home.

“Occasionally uplifting and sometimes heartbreaking, it is nothing less than sublime.”

“It covers difficult ground, but to say it leaves no trace would be a lie. It definitely makes its mark.”

“…is one of the best films of 2018 and promises to make a star of [it’s actors].”

This entertaining, animated fantasy has “intellectual ballast, but it’s cleverly disguised. ” “Beneath the easy slapstick, there’s a timely moral too: Don’t fear the unknown, embrace it. Just try not to squish it.”

From the reviews:

‘…a charming family film…” with a “thoughtful lesson about tolerance, division and learning to see from the perspective of others.”

“…a surprisingly sophisticated allegory about the consequences of conformity and the importance of questioning authority. Oh, and the songs are catchy too.”

Service Sunday (5th Sunday of the Month) @ Sanctuary UCC Storefront Ministry Center
Mar 31 @ 10:00 am – 11:00 am

Everybody needs a little sanctuary!

Sanctuary’s vision is to be out – in the city – serving God’s people with love and care. Each 5th Sunday we will organize several service opportunities from which folk may choose to serve. These opportunities will always include:

  • making sandwiches for the parishioners of Cambridge’s Outdoor Church at 458 High Street;
  • systemic activism (ie: writing letters or making phone calls to engender change for justice);
  • an inter-generational opportunity to help (beginning in the spring of 2017).

Check back to find out more about this month’s project(s)!

If you are looking for our bi-monthly,  Second Thursday of the Month commitment to make and serve the evening meal during the even numbered months (Feb, April, June, August, Oct, Dec) at Bread of Life in Malden click here.
