“For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven.” – Ecclesiastes 3:1

Plenty of times when I was younger the stereo in our Ford Taurus sang: “To everything, turn, turn, turn. There is a season, turn, turn, turn.” The Byrds song was ubiquitous. And I had no idea I was listening to scripture.

“For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven.” The author of Ecclesiastes shares this timeless wisdom. “There is a time to be born, and a time to die. I time to plant and a time to reep, a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance.”

I think we all know that. Each of us can think of a moment we wept and a moment we laughed. We know we were born. We know we will die. We have mourned and danced. The moments are clear. The memories are poignant.

But how do these moments turn, one to the next? When does mourning end? When can we laugh and dance again?

Let’s take a cue from the seasons. Nature always seems to scoff at our notions of “the official end of Summer.” Snow in April is in the realm of possibility too.

The seasons are turning yet again. But not once and for all.
What is turning in you? What do you notice as it turns.

It may not happen all at once. But the Holy is in the midst of it all.
