Artist’s Statement

I infuse my work with an active, vibrant, sensuous love of existence. The physical solidity of all true spirituality is at the heart of all my work. I find color particularly delicious and prefer to capture it “in motion.”

I am inspired by ancient icons and their mandate to “paint the glory of God” and by the movement and evocative aspects of art and life on the heroic scale, even when focusing on minutiae.

My journey has traversed through landscape, figure, face and abstraction; but always the form emerges, triumphant and alive.

My relationship with God is at the heart of all my work, informing and vitalizing the subject and its’ emergence. To evoke this interconnectedness I create several pieces around a central theme such as Creation, Woman, Transformations, Mystery, and Song: Inviting us deeper into the richness of life in God.

Painting the Glory of God” – A collection of paintings in response to Psalms of David

Painter Gay Cox’s Psalms will be the subject of ARTChurch again this month. This work has been installed since June and we will spend another service digging deeply into the beauty and imagery of Ms. Cox’s artistry.

About ARTChurch: Inspired by the rich spirituality and deep themes inherent in art, ARTChurch looks at scripture and liturgy through the lens of the art installed in the Gallery at Sanctuary UCC. On the second Sunday of each month, we experience the Holy—and the holy in each other—through the images, colors, themes and creative energies of the installation, the artist’s perspective and that which is seen by the observer.

“Tough Guise 2: Violence, Manhood and American Culture”
Jul 22 @ 3:00 pm – 6:00 pm

Pioneering anti-violence educator and cultural theorist Jackson Katz argues that the ongoing epidemic of men’s violence in America is rooted in our inability as a society to move beyond outmoded ideals of manhood. In a sweeping analysis that cuts across racial, ethnic, and class lines, Katz examines mass shootings, day-to-day gun violence, violence against women, bullying, gay-bashing, and American militarism against the backdrop of a culture that has normalized violent and regressive forms of masculinity in the face of challenges to traditional male power and authority.

Second in a four film series.”Violence, An American Dis-Ease : How Do We Treat It?” Join your neighbors in the screening and discussion of (4) films which will consider the American Disease of violence. The films will take us on a journey through the causes and conditions of some of America’s dis-ease including the gun debate, toxic masculinity, the impact of pornography on our sexuality and the ease with which we use violence towards those who are different.

Co-Sponsored by Sanctuary UCC, Medford Film Collaborative, Tufts Community Relations – with support from a Local Arts Council grant from the Medford Arts Council.

Messy Church
Jul 22 @ 4:00 pm – 5:30 pm

Traditional worship services can be hard to enjoy as a family.
That’s why we made Messy Church!

Messy Church is a worship service designed especially for children, ages 0-5, and their parents.

At Messy Church, we sing, we read bible stories, we play games, do crafts, and eat dinner together.

And, even more importantly, we send home with resources to help you keep the conversation about faith and values going!
