to make a commitment
to “Be The Church” together!
Once per Month–Second Sunday (4-6)
Worship & Potluck Supper
@ Hillside Community Church.

Traditional worship services can be hard to enjoy as a family.

That’s why we made Messy Church! Messy Church for God’s Messy People.

Progressive, contemporary, inter-generational worship and community experience for today’s busy families – where we will sing, play, dance, eat, and grow with God – and sometimes make a mess.

The service will be kid driven, messy, easy to connect with and include movement, story, song, communion and celebration! Every worship will be followed by a community-wide pot-luck supper from 5 to 6 pm and we’ll have you home for bath time!

Our older children will take on some of the worship leadership roles and everyone will help with the set up and clean up.

A Pickup Choir will meet at 3:15 to help create the joy and lead the singing.

This Month’s Artist is still creating!  Check back later for details about the artist and art being installed for this month’s ARTChurch!

About ARTChurch: Inspired by the rich spirituality and deep themes inherent in art, ARTChurch looks at scripture and liturgy through the lens of the art installed in the Gallery at Sanctuary UCC. On the second Sunday of each month, we experience the Holy—and the holy in each other—through the images, colors, themes and creative energies of the installation, the artist’s perspective and that which is seen by the observer.

Unearthing Traces

Artists:

Priya Dave, Flor De Maria Delgadillo, Juyon Lee, Emily McDonald, Jana Purington, Camila Alexzandra Sánchez-Longo, Nikki Silva and Zuofu Wang

On Unearthing Traces:

Unearthing Traces is a group exhibition composed of a select group of first year graduate students pursuing a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University. Approaching with diverse practices, participating artists came together in an intimate space of Sanctuary UCC, creating an environment for converging ideas and relations. Unearthing Traces is a site of connecting explorations that fuel individual artist’s research. From works that explore experiences of absence and displacement to pieces literally composed of traces and marks of drawing, this exhibition invites the community of Sanctuary UCC and Boston to ponder upon what it means to discover, observe, and bring light to the things that remain.

ARTChurch | Dirkje Legerstee “Angels in Human Skin”
Jan 19 @ 10:00 am – 11:00 am

This Month’s Artist is Dirkje Legerstee – Angels in Human Skin

Scripture: Psalm 40:1-11

Psalm 40, a vivid, physical testimony of being heard, seen, helped begins with these words, I waited patiently for God; and God inclined unto me, and heard my cry; and becomes a song of praise. The Psalmist praises God’s steadfast love and offers a glimpse of what it is like to be wanted – called. Witnessing to the delight of living in the ways of God’s life-giving law; and wanting to remain in God’s steadfast love and faithfulness the writer echoes Samuel’s call, “Here I am”.

Being “Called” can happen in many ways. God allows us the opportunity to use who we are and what we offer to the world in the service of God’s love. Receiving God’s call is an extravagant gift of love. By calling us, God says to us, you are seen, you are known, and you are loved.

ARTChurch this month will use this Psalm and the experience of ‘call’ to reflect on the testimony of Dirkje’s work – of her call and journey of being heard, seen, and helped.

~~~
Prayer for the Second Sunday after the Epiphany
Faithful God, you call, claim, and send believers into the world with your radiant love. Help us to live as ones who are called, claimed, and sent with your blessing, journeying to the places and spaces where we are called to share our light and your love. Amen.
Messy Church & Potluck: “Love Is…”
Feb 9 @ 4:00 pm – 5:30 pm
February Theme: Love is…
(Saint) Paul’s friends in Corinth (the very early church) had lots of good ideas, but sometimes they forgot what was most important… love.  Paul wanted to help them remember and wrote a letter to remind them what love is – AND what love is not!
Parents and kids will have chance to teach each other about what love doesn’t do and what love is!
We will sing of love and dance and play and have some chocolate valentines too!!
Theme: God Blesses the Growth
On this third week of readings about being a blessing (from the Sermon on the Mount), Jesus’ pointed, deeper questions in the gospel lesson from Matthew 5, invite us to the heart of daily living with him. We are presented with choices from our awakening to the end of each day – and our choices, our words and actions matter, whatever they are! There is no small standard here. The bar is set high.
As we explore the art work and Holocaust stories of Angels in Human Skin, we will use the art to consider how our choices reflect our faith – and how our faith empowers us to let our yes-be-yes and our no-be-no.
Join us for this final opportunity to see the art and share the stories of artist Rev. Dr.
Dirkje Legerstee – Angels in Human Skin
Prayer for the Sixth Sunday after the Epiphany
God, help us to grow with open eyes and open hearts. Help us to open our hearts to what breaks our hearts, so that we may live with compassion and peace. Open our eyes to the abundance found in Creation, in what blooms and grows even against the odds. Amen.
