Holocaust Remembrance Presentation | Dirkje Legerstee
Feb 5 @ 7:30 pm – 8:30 pm

Sanctuary UCC is partnering with Temple Shalom to bring you Dirkje Legerstee’s gripping story of her family’s survival as WWII Nazi War victims.

Wednesday, February 5, 2020 @ 7:30pm

“Angels in Human Skin”, tells the true story of two teenagers from different countries and faith traditions whose lives collide in the terror of war. The presentation and slide show creates a living link to history through the telling of a family’s survival of WWII. The narrative shares the backgrounds of a Dutch Christian forcibly taken by the Nazis as a Labor slave, and of a Polish Jew who escapes the ghetto to hide in the open. Personal story, history and moral choice-making are woven throughout.

Rev. Dr. Legerstee explains: “During her life, my mother shared her story each year so that, “children would know the truth” of the holocaust. My father spoke with all who were interested. His testimony as a Dutch Labor Slave is now part of the archives at the Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington D.C. (collections.ushmm.org/search/catalog/irn558974). Both my parents hoped to contribute to a better world by sharing their stories.”

It is said that what is personal is most universal. The story of survival includes the courage of upstanders, and witnesses to the power of hope in the midst of despair. It is a tale for our own time. The accompanying art installation, is currently available at Sanctuary UCC for viewing January 03 through February 16, 2020.

Artist Statement:

The Threshing Place is a series of photographs made with paper figures that my mother used to illustrate Bible stories to children. These figures would be put on felt backdrops representing Biblical landscapes as the story was told. By arranging and photographing parts of this teaching archive in new contexts, I am rediscovering these characters and finding new, revised, and relevant meanings.

Raised as a fundamentalist and evangelical Christian, where the answers came from one source and questioning that authority was strongly discouraged, I am now a wandering and wondering soul. I am using this body of work as an inquiry into what is represented and taught in the faith, what is retold and remembered, and what is investigated and revised. The title, The Threshing Place, is a reference from the Book of Ruth in the Old Testament, and the threshing place is where the wheat gets separated from the chaff. This is a symbolic reference to the process of discerning where truth remains for me.

The questioning is the journey; the questioning is the answer.

~~~
“The Threshing Place” installment is from Feb. 17 to March 27.
