Given the recommendations of our local Health Department, our denomination and the CDC ; as of March 12 Sanctuary UCC has determined to eliminate onsite gathering for at least two weeks.

As the situation is shifting rapidly, we ask that you too keep watch on these reliable websites – and watch for further notification from us via email as well as these online spaces for up to date information about access to online programs and worship at Sanctuary.

Scripture: John 4:5-42

Theme: The Church and the Web of Inter-Connection

This planet is a much smaller, much more fragile place than the modern era ever imagined… Frederick Buechner compares humanity to a gigantic spider web: “if you touch it anywhere, you set the whole thing trembling …. As we move around this world and as we act with kindness, perhaps, or with indifference, or with hostility, toward the people we meet, we too are setting the great spider web a-tremble… Our lives are [inextricably] linked. No man [no woman] is an island ….” (Frederick Buechner, The Hungering Dark [New York: Seabury Press, 1969], 45-46)

The Church has an opportunity to connect like no other system can – how will we share good news in the face of today’s context of cyber speed, isolation, political division and global health concerns?

~~~
Prayer for the Third Sunday in Lent: God, you offer us the water of life. We turn to you in trust, knowing that your faithful provision can meet all our needs. May our gratitude propel us out to share the good news of new life with other thirsty people. Amen.
Fri
ONLINE ONLY – “Come Sunday” | Faith and Film @ https://zoom.us/j/347760039
Mar 27 @ 6:30 pm – 9:30 pm
ZOOM DETAILS BELOW
You Will Need access to Netflix to view the film!
Here is how we are planning the evening:
  • Faith and Film will have the same time frame as normal.
  • We will join together on zoom (see access below) from 6:30 to about 6:45 to say hello, get connected to each other,  and hear from the leaders with their invitation to the film.
  • Then we will begin watching the film (via our own Netflix access). So we will all be watching together, just in separate rooms ;-).
  • When the film is finished, we will take a 3 minute break
  • Return to zoom for the discussion!
  • As always, Anna and Chad will lead the discussion and Rev. Wendy will “Host” the meeting, managing the zoom room.
We hope you will give it a try. We are finding that we need each other now more than ever – and sharing our experience of the film will ground us in the community we share at Faith and Film; while honoring our need for social distancing.
Film Overview: What would you do if your beliefs were to change, and yet you were leading the faith journeys of others? This film examines one man and the consequences of his actions in his church.
Film Reviews:
“Takes the challenges of faith
seriously. We need more movies like it.”
“A cautionary tale about the abuses and theological confusion that can arise in charismatic cultures where ‘God told me’ is common parlance.”
~~~

About Faith and Film: Chad & Anna Kidd will lead the discussion. BYOB. Bring your own beer, wine or soda and experience the places where Pop culture meets our faith. We will watch a current film followed by a discussion about themes of morality, faith, and humanity led by local theologians and community leaders.

This Film Screening and Discussion are free – suggested $10.00 donation is welcomed.

For information about the film title, please email office@sanctuaryucc.org or call 781-395-3360.

ONLINE ONLY – Sunday Circle | Be Not Afraid? Seriously? @ https://zoom.us/j/751379207
Mar 29 @ 10:00 am – 11:00 am

Theme: Be Not Afraid? Are You Serious, Jesus? A Mini Sermon on Fear from Nadia Bolz-Weber

Luke 13:22, 31-34 (NRSV)

Please note: While we typically do not gather for worship on fifth Sundays, given what is happening in the world, we WILL gather for online Sunday Circle. We will not be making sandwiches for outdoor church. Other arrangements have been made for food for the Outdoor Church community.

In this text from Luke, Jesus has set his face to his Passion, continues to teach along the way of the Kin-dom, is warned that Herod wants to do away with him, and his response is pretty bold! Jesus knows Herod wants to kill him and yet he keeps his face set to Jerusalem – and the work laid out in front of him.

So how – Jesus – can we, who are so afraid – possibly keep showing up and setting our faces to our future? You tell us to “be not afraid”, but seriously, Jesus – that is not enough to make us not afraid! So how do we be right now? How!?!

Prayer for the Fifth Sunday in Lent: Covenant God, may we find ourselves trusting you when the evidence tells us otherwise. May we find ourselves following you when the world says not to. May we find ourselves living with the impossible when everything else says we can’t. May we hear the promise in our souls, and live it in our world. Amen.
