Scripture: Psalm 40:1-11

Psalm 40, a vivid, physical testimony of being heard, seen, helped begins with these words, I waited patiently for God; and God inclined unto me, and heard my cry; and becomes a song of praise. The Psalmist praises God’s steadfast love and offers a glimpse of what it is like to be wanted – called. Witnessing to the delight of living in the ways of God’s life-giving law; and wanting to remain in God’s steadfast love and faithfulness the writer echoes Samuel’s call, “Here I am”.

Being “Called” can happen in many ways. God allows us the opportunity to use who we are and what we offer to the world in the service of God’s love. Receiving God’s call is an extravagant gift of love. By calling us, God says to us, you are seen, you are known, and you are loved.

ARTChurch this month will use this Psalm and the experience of ‘call’ to reflect on the testimony of Dirkje’s work – of her call and journey of being heard, seen, and helped.

Prayer for the Second Sunday after the Epiphany
Faithful God, you call, claim, and send believers into the world with your radiant love. Help us to live as ones who are called, claimed, and sent with your blessing, journeying to the places and spaces where we are called to share our light and your love. Amen.

Theme: God Blesses the Growth

On this third week of readings about being a blessing (from the Sermon on the Mount), Jesus’ pointed, deeper questions in the gospel lesson from Matthew 5, invite us to the heart of daily living with him. We are presented with choices from our awakening to the end of each day – and our choices, our words and actions matter, whatever they are! There is no small standard here. The bar is set high.

As we explore the art work and Holocaust stories of Angels in Human Skin, we will use the art to consider how our choices reflect our faith – and how our faith empowers us to let our yes-be-yes and our no-be-no.
Join us for this final opportunity to see the art and share the stories of artist Rev. Dr.

Prayer for the Sixth Sunday after the Epiphany

God, help us to grow with open eyes and open hearts. Help us to open our hearts to what breaks our hearts, so that we may live with compassion and peace. Open our eyes to the abundance found in Creation, in what blooms and grows even against the odds. Amen.

Theme: The Lord is my Shepherd, There is Nothing That I Lack

Psalm 23

The well-known and well-loved Psalm 23 speaks of the complete provision, the wholeness, and comprehensiveness of the shepherd’s care for his sheep. Food, protection, honor and reconciliation, a table where enemies can sit together at a banquet, are all ways in which the shepherd shows love. BUT, it also speaks of the darkness and the valleys in which we human beings find ourselves.

So, how can we say that “we lack nothing” in the midst of a global pandemic? Where is this blankety-blank Shepherd when our hearts are full of fear? Where is God when a deadly illness that we do not understand is galloping across the world and we can’t find food, toilet tissue, patience, or love?

This Sunday, for Online ARTChurch we will use series of artists’ images for Psalm 23 to consider these deep questions and discover our Shepherd’s provision.

Prayer for the Forth Sunday in Lent

God of song and heartache, you know that the most challenging places cause our hearts to sing the prettiest songs. The shadow of death makes it dark in the valley, but in these moments we are like seeds in soil, waiting for the right moment to put down roots and send up shoots toward the surface. Cause our hearts to rest in what we cannot see with our eyes; to hear what the ear cannot decipher, and to love the mystery of your love. Amen.
