Faith & Film While We Practice Social Distancing

You Will Need Access to Netflix to View the Film!

Here is how we are planning the evening:

  • Faith and Film will have the same time frame as normal.
  • We will join together on zoom (see access in the event) from 6:30 to about 6:45 to say hello, get connected to each other, and hear from the leaders with their invitation to the film.

  • Then we will begin watching the film (via our own, individual Netflix access). So we will all be watching together, just in separate rooms 😉.

  • When the film is finished, we will take a 3 minute break and return to zoom for the discussion!

As always, Anna and Chad will lead the discussion and Rev. Wendy will “Host” the meeting, managing the zoom room.

We hope you will give it a try. We are finding that we need each other now more than ever – and sharing our experience of the film will ground us in the community we share at Faith and Film; while honoring our need for social distancing.

While some churches shun pop culture, Sanctuary UCC believes it provides us with amazing opportunities to reflect on who we are and what matters to us most. In our faith and film series, we invite our community together to reflect on recent films through the lens of spirituality.

Each month, we show a new hi-def film on our large movie screen. We offer comfortable seating and light snacks, followed by a lively discussion led by our brilliant film buffs and theologians, Anna and Chad Kidd.

BYO beer, wine, and soda. A free will offering will be collected after the film – please help support this vital ministry!

Black Lives Matter Film Series | Just Mercy
Jul 17 @ 6:30 pm – 9:30 pm

With the current social conditions present in both local and global perspectives, it is essential now to educate ourselves and act deliberately to be anti-racist. Sanctuary UCC is partnering with Hillside Community Church to bring you the Black Lives Matter Film Series.

This collection of films will deconstruct and frame an understanding of the inherent power structures in America and the effects this debilitating system has on communities and people of color. Please join us in listening, understanding, and acting in dismantling what racism is in our community.

ABOUT THE FILM

After graduating from Harvard, Bryan Stevenson heads to Alabama to defend those wrongly condemned or those not afforded proper representation. One of his first cases is that of Walter McMillian, who is sentenced to die in 1987 for the murder of an 18-year-old girl, despite evidence proving his innocence. In the years that follow, Stevenson encounters racism and legal and political maneuverings as he tirelessly fights for McMillian’s life.

Reviews:
“This is an important movie to watch right now as we talk about injustice, doing the right thing…” — Brandon Collins “Medium Popcorn”

“Simply told with limited theatrics and anchored by some weighty vulnerable performances, Just Mercy is an excellent watch.” — Kate Rodger “Newshub (NZ)”

To keep everyone safe, we will be implementing existing and required safety measures; such as social distancing of 6ft between groups and requiring everyone to wear masks.

There will be physical space for the outdoor film series for 24 “family groups” which can range from 1 to 4 people. (We will mark off 6×6 spaces for each family group). We also have space on Zoom – Zoom registrants will join for gathering time — access will be needed to watch the film at home — and return to Zoom for breakout conversations to happen concurrently with conversations happening in the outdoor space.

Bring your own chairs (preferably beach/low chairs so people can see behind you), blankets, snacks, and drinks. The church will only be open for the rest room.

If weather conditions are inconvenient, all will move to Zoom (meaning access will be required at home through Netflix, Amazon, etc.).
