Inspired by the rich spirituality and deep themes inherent in art, ARTChurch looks at scripture and liturgy through the lens of the art installed in the Gallery at Sanctuary UCC. On the second Sunday of each month, we experience the Holy—and the holy in each other—through the images, colors, themes and creative energies of the installation, the artist’s perspective and that which is seen by the observer.

We do some of the things we always do in worship—sing, pray and share—and some new creating as we discover ways that God is speaking through the experience. We expect a multi-sensory experience of worship that will honor our call, nurture the spirit and feed the soul!

About the artist:

Haleh FotowatI was born in Tehran, Iran. I obtained my bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering in Tehran before moving to the United States to pursue my master’s and then PhD in Neuroscience. I am currently a postdoctoral researcher in neuroscience at Harvard University.Art has always been an integral part of my life. I have been playing a musical instrument called the Kanun for the past 29 years. My training in art started also many years ago in Tehran where I took courses in drawing and acrylic painting. More recently, I have studied creative painting at the Ottawa School of Art. I am passionate about observing life from scientific and artistic points of view. There is always a big element of spontaneity and music in my paintings. My paintings start with drawing patterns that I draw on the spot while listening to music: jagged lines, curved lines, maybe words, whatever my hand feels like doing at that point till I decide to stop, and then I add paint. I love painting like this since I never know what I will get in the end. I feel like by doing this I can bring out a part of me on that day that I would have never known existed had I not painted.
