About the artist:
Haleh Fotowat
I was born in Tehran, Iran. I obtained my bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering in Tehran before moving to the United States to pursue my master’s and then PhD in Neuroscience. I am currently a postdoctoral researcher in neuroscience at Harvard University.
Art has always been an integral part of my life. I have been playing a musical instrument called the Kanun for the past 29 years. My training in art started also many years ago in Tehran where I took courses in drawing and acrylic painting. More recently, I have studied creative painting at the Ottawa School of Art.
I am passionate about observing life from scientific and artistic points of view. There is always a big element of spontaneity and music in my paintings. My paintings start with drawing patterns that I draw on the spot while listening to music: jagged lines, curved lines, maybe words, whatever my hand feels like doing at that point till I decide to stop, and then I add paint. I love painting like this since I never know what I will get in the end. I feel like by doing this I can bring out a part of me on that day that I would have never known existed had I not painted.
