Sunday Soul Circle: Womb & Wing – Creation Groaning Toward Life

“We know that the whole creation has been groaning in labor pains until now; and not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the first fruits.” –Romans 8:22-25

Mother’s Day can hold many things: gratitude, joy, grief, absence, tenderness, complexity, longing, and love. So this Sunday, we are making room for more than one story. We will not flatten the day into sweetness or sentiment. Instead, we will widen the frame and reflect on the sacred work of mothering in all its forms: bearing, tending, sheltering, grieving, nourishing, and helping life come forth.

Our grounding text comes from Romans 8, where Paul writes that “the whole creation has been groaning in labor pains until now.” It is one of scripture’s most honest and embodied images. Creation is not finished. Creation is laboring. The world groans. Our bodies groan. Our communities groan. And yet, in this vision, groaning is not the absence of hope. It is the sound of life pressing toward birth.

This Sunday, we will ask: What is groaning in us and around us? What is still becoming? What is asking to be tended, sheltered, or released? And where might we be called to become midwives of hope for ourselves, for one another, and for the world God so fiercely loves?
