Sunday Soul Circle: Open Handed Love

For four Sundays, we have been making room, remembering, receiving what remains, and giving thanks. This Sunday, our six-week journey turns toward release.

Release does not mean forgetting. It does not mean pretending something mattered less than it did. And it does not mean rushing ourselves toward closure. Sometimes release is simply the spiritual practice of opening a hand that has been holding very tightly. In the Gospel of John, Mary Magdalene recognizes the risen Jesus and reaches toward him, only to hear: “Do not hold on to me.” Their love has not ended, but it cannot remain exactly as it was.

That feels especially close to us now. As Sanctuary approaches the end of its mission and ministry, we are not being asked to release what Sanctuary has meant. We are being asked to release our need for Sanctuary to continue being what it has been. This Sunday, through scripture, reflection, embodied prayer, and conversation, we will wonder together: What am I being asked to loosen my hold on?
