The Swimmers (2022) | Faith and Film

March 3, 2023 @ 6:15 pm - 9:30 pm

About this Film:

The Swimmers is a Faith and Film selection chosen in association with Sanctuary’s 2023 IAmMigration Arts and Inspiration Series.

A true story of two Syrian sisters who flee their war-torn home in Damascus and swim for hours in choppy Mediterranean seas to reach Greece as asylum seekers before going on to compete at the Rio Olympic Games on “The Refugee” team.  They use their swimming skills – along with kindness, compassion, and selflessness –  to help and inspire others.  Film run time 135 min.

Reviews:

  • Beautiful, heartbreaking, and raw. This movie shows the real struggles refugees and asylum seekers experience all around the world, but also the hope they hold on to; to survive, to reunite, to help others, and to succeed.
  • This is the type of film that forces you to sit up and see things in perspective.
  • …a harrowing journey as refugees, putting both their hearts and champion swimming skills to heroic use.
