Rahab: YHWH’s Bootstrap Heroine, Jericho’s Shame, or…?

For centuries, Christians have gave the story of Rahab this headline: “Jericho Lady of the Night Makes Good by YHWH’s Side!” More recently, from a perspective that struggles with the idea that God might endorse genocide, the summary reads: “You Won’t Believe the real History of Jericho’s Great Betrayer!”

In our time, however, surrounded as we are with geopolitical conflicts, moral panics, and conspiracy theories, perhaps we know better than to write a headline before we ask: what do you do when God decides to destroy your city?
