Bestselling author Elizabeth Gilbert wrote that

“Power is a neutral energy source, like tofu. It’s what you do with it that gives it flavor.”

Carnivore that I am – I don’t have a whole lot of experience with tofu – but I sure do love this analogy.

Labeling power as neutral gives us a starting place to – well – shift power. Like my guy Jesus says, let’s be about “power-with” rather than “power-over-under-or-against.”

Wouldn’t it be great if we all started there – and then used our power in ways that smelled like smiles, that tasted like grace, that satisfied our hunger for compassion, community, and connection?

Let’s come up with some new recipes to season our society with justice and equity for all.

Let’s taste-test new kinds of power – where the biting, bitter, burnt taste of hate is replaced by the creamy, rich, buttery flavor of love.

Gosh – my mouth is watering just thinking about it!

For more on tofu and the balance of power – take a look at Rev. Tom’s sermon about power (from last week) on the Hillside Website.

And join us this Sunday at 10:30 am at Hillside Community Church – onsite or online – for our summer sermon series on the life lessons we learned in kindergarten.

Because everybody needs a little sanctuary – and a loving community of caring connection.
